Bengaluru: Semiconductor equipment maker Lam Research plans to invest about ₹10,000 crore in India over the next several years. The money will build its first factory in India for silicon components and expand its research and development.

The factory will handle the whole process, from producing silicon ingots to finishing parts for the most advanced chipmaking. The research expansion adds to Lam’s engineering centre in India, which already does design, testing and validation work for customers worldwide.

“India represents an important part of Lam’s global innovation and growth strategy. Our continuing expansion in India reflects our confidence in the country’s talent, growing semiconductor ecosystem, and supportive policy environment.”

Rangesh Raghavan, Corporate Vice President and Managing Director, Lam Research India

Lam has worked in India for more than 25 years. It expects to buy materials, precision parts, gases, chemicals and testing services from Indian suppliers, and it plans to train up to 60,000 students with the Indian Institute of Science and the India Semiconductor Mission.

Our analysis

India is moving into Lam’s global supply chain, not only its research network. Because the factory will serve Lam’s customers around the world, its future does not depend on how many chip plants India builds. Indian suppliers get a direct way into one of the most demanding industries there is.
