Mumbai: Japan’s Fujifilm will invest about ₹800 crore, in phases, in a plant at the Dholera Special Investment Region in Gujarat to make materials for semiconductor manufacturing. The plant will supply India’s first commercial chip fab, which Tata Electronics is building at Dholera.
Fujifilm and Tata Electronics have signed a memorandum of understanding under which Fujifilm will develop and supply materials suited to the Dholera fab. Fujifilm will also help Indian chemical companies with the technology, quality control and production methods needed to make high-purity chemicals.
“Fujifilm positions its semiconductor materials business as a key growth driver for Fujifilm Group and recognizes India’s rapidly expanding semiconductor market as a critical opportunity for further business expansion.”
Teiichi Goto, President, Representative Director and Chief Executive Officer, FUJIFILM Holdings Corporation
Tata Electronics is spending ₹91,000 crore on the Dholera fab. It will make 300 mm wafers at 28nm to 110nm for chips used in cars, consumer electronics, computers, communications and AI.
The Narrative Republic: Partners in India’s Growth
Our analysis
India’s first commercial chip plant will have a local supplier of critical materials before it starts production. Tata gets a reliable source next door, and Fujifilm gets an early position in a market that grows with every new fab. Training Indian chemical companies means the benefits will reach well beyond this one plant.
