Zimmer Biomet Opens GCC in Bengaluru

Zimmer Biomet opened a global capability centre in Bengaluru in May 2026. The medtech company’s centre focuses on patient monitoring software, AI driven surgical platforms, and procurement and supply chain work for Asia Pacific. Later reports put planned hiring at about 500 people over three years.

Zimmer Biomet is a US listed medical device maker headquartered in Warsaw, Indiana, known for knee, hip and shoulder implants and robotic assisted surgery systems. It reported 2025 net sales of USD 8.23 billion, up 7.2%, with operations in more than 25 countries and sales in over 100. It runs a South Asia business from India and says it is widening its clinical innovation footprint in the country.

What the centre does

Zimmer Biomet unveiled its global capability centre in Bengaluru in May 2026. In July 2026 the company said it plans to hire 500 people there over the next three years, about two thirds of them in technology roles, and that headcount could eventually run into the thousands.

The centre spans software engineering, product design, R&D, quality, regulatory affairs and finance. AI is a central focus, applied to robotics, surgical planning and product development, alongside patient monitoring software, cloud and enterprise technology, data analytics, IT security, and procurement and supply chain for the Asia Pacific market. The launch comes as the company pushes its ROSA robotic knee system and ZBEdge digital care platform. Its technology leadership says the aim is to have all the relevant functions running together, so multidisciplinary teams can speed up innovation for surgeons, care teams and patients.

Why Bengaluru

Zimmer Biomet has not given a Bengaluru specific reason. It describes the centre as a way to combine its musculoskeletal expertise with India’s digital engineering ecosystem, and says the expansion reflects its growing presence in India. Bengaluru is also one of the country’s leading healthcare technology hubs, with medtech, pharma, biotech and digital health companies investing there.

What it signals

The notable part is the mix. Putting R&D, quality and regulatory roles in Bengaluru alongside IT shows a device maker trusting India with work close to product design and approval. A 500 person plan is modest for a company of this size, but talk of thousands suggests the centre is being sized for its robotics and AI roadmap rather than for cost savings alone. Medtronic and Philips have already set up or expanded capability centres in India, and this move keeps Zimmer Biomet in step with those peers as its own products lean more on software, data and robotics.
