Syngenta Expands Its GCC in Pune

Syngenta expanded its capability centre in Pune in January 2026, where headcount now tops 1,100. The site supports global finance, IT and digital work, with a growing focus on data science and AI.

Syngenta Group is an agricultural science and technology company registered in Shanghai with management headquarters in Switzerland. It reported 2025 sales of USD 28.4 billion and EBITDA of USD 4.4 billion, and employs more than 50,000 people in over 90 countries. In India it carries out crop protection formulation, seed production and plant breeding, runs a biologicals manufacturing site, and has had a presence in Pune for a decade. Its crop protection arm grew 2025 sales by 4% to USD 13.7 billion even as group sales slipped 1%, and it launched its ALTESSIA rice herbicide in India.

What the centre does

Syngenta announced a significant expansion of its Pune global capability centre on 20 January 2026. The centre, run through Syngenta Global Capability Center Pvt Ltd, has more than 1,100 professionals and supports the group’s global finance and IT and digital functions, as well as regional operations for its AMEA region.

The expansion puts more weight on data science and artificial intelligence, which the company calls central to its digital transformation. Syngenta says the Pune teams are applying AI powered solutions to raise operational performance. The company also presents the centre as a career route, offering exposure to global work, cross functional roles and career development. It did not disclose the investment involved or a new hiring target.

Why Pune

Syngenta has not given specific reasons for choosing Pune. The company points to its confidence in India’s talent ecosystem and to the global exposure, cross functional roles and career development the centre offers employees. The expansion builds on the company’s decade long presence in the city, so it extends an established base rather than starting a new one.

What it signals

At over 1,100 people, the Pune centre is already a sizeable part of Syngenta’s corporate engine. The AI push suggests a shift from processing finance and IT work towards building the analytics the business relies on. It also shows Pune holding its own as a GCC destination for industrial and science led groups, outside the usual pull of Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
