SES Expands Its GCC in Chennai

SES inaugurated a new office at DLF Cyber City Tech Campus in Chennai in September 2026. The satellite operator’s India workforce has tripled to more than 600 people since it opened in Chennai in 2025, mostly in technical and support roles.

SES is a satellite operator headquartered in Luxembourg and listed on the Paris and Luxembourg stock exchanges. It runs satellites in geostationary and medium earth orbit, including the O3b mPOWER constellation, and completed its acquisition of Intelsat on 17 July 2025. SES reported 2025 revenue of €2,627 million, or €3,512 million on a like for like basis that counts Intelsat for the full period. It has worked in India with ISRO and local partners for more than two decades and holds 49% of a satellite connectivity joint venture with Jio Platforms.

What the centre does

SES inaugurated the new office at the DLF Cyber City Tech Campus in Chennai on 8 September 2026, with Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister and its Economy Minister in attendance. Its India workforce has tripled to more than 600 since it opened its first Chennai office on the same campus in April 2025. Intelsat, now part of SES, has operated in the city for more than five years.

Chennai serves SES’s needs for technical and supporting functional roles. Engineers, product managers and operations teams there work across the company’s global portfolio, including the O3b mPOWER fleet and its geostationary satellites, and SES plans to keep expanding these teams. It has not disclosed the investment or a hiring target.

Why Chennai

SES has pointed to its confidence in India’s talent base and the region’s growing role in technology and the space sector. When it opened its first Chennai office in 2025, it cited India’s skilled workforce and technology sector and said Indian staff could help it scale operations quickly. The city also gave it an existing base, since Intelsat had operations in Chennai well before the two companies combined.

What it signals

Tripling the India team in about 17 months, while integrating Intelsat, suggests Chennai has become a working centre for the merged company rather than a regional office. Because the teams cover the global fleet, their output feeds operations in many markets, not only India. The build out also lines up with SES’s move into Indian satellite connectivity through its venture with Jio. And with like for like revenue down 5% in the first half of 2026, it shows SES is still adding engineering and operations capacity while managing a softer top line.
