MSD opened its Hyderabad Tech Centre in February 2025 and in September 2026 inaugurated an expanded 2.5 lakh sq ft facility in Hitec City to support its global Human Health business.
MSD, the trade name of Merck & Co., Inc., Rahway, New Jersey, outside the US and Canada, is a biopharmaceutical company with more than 130 years of history in medicines and vaccines for people and animals. It reported worldwide sales of $65 billion for 2025. In India, its sites employed about 1,800 people in early 2025 across oncology, diabetes, vaccines, animal health and technology, and the company said then it expected roughly 2,700 by the end of that year.
What the centre does
MSD first opened its Hyderabad Tech Centre in February 2025, when a senior company executive said it was looking for digital innovators to help shorten the time needed to bring new treatments to patients. In September 2026 it inaugurated an expanded 2.5 lakh sq ft facility in Hitec City, opened by the Telangana IT and Industries Minister.
The centre works on enterprise digital technology across artificial intelligence, data, digital platforms, cybersecurity, cloud, automation and software engineering. It supports MSD’s global Human Health business as part of the company’s worldwide technology network. MSD has not disclosed headcount for the site, though the company said in 2025 it expected its India workforce to double or more within a couple of years.
Why Hyderabad
MSD said Hyderabad’s technology ecosystem, deep digital expertise and strong talent pool made it an ideal location. The city also offers a large life sciences base: the state’s IT minister said Telangana has more than 2,000 life sciences companies and that Hyderabad has one of the largest concentrations of USFDA approved facilities outside the US.
What it signals
MSD went from launch to a 2.5 lakh sq ft facility in about 19 months, a fast move from first site to scale. The mandate is broad enterprise technology rather than a narrow analytics unit, which points to Hyderabad taking on a wide share of the group’s digital work. It also adds MSD to the large US drugmakers already running technology hubs in the city, which will sharpen competition for experienced data and AI talent in life sciences.
