Greif opened a global capability centre in Chennai on 12 June 2026. The industrial packaging group is starting with data and AI engineering, analytics, HR, learning and development, and rewards. Headcount and floor space were not disclosed.
Greif is an industrial packaging company founded in 1877 and based in Delaware, Ohio, with operations in more than 35 countries. It reported net sales of $3.93 billion from continuing operations for fiscal 2025, an eleven month year after it moved its year end to September, and in August 2025 it completed the $1.8 billion sale of its containerboard business. Greif entered India in March 2024 through its acquisition of Ipackchem, which runs three plants in Ankleshwar and Daman making bottles and jerrycans for the agrochemical sector.
What the centre does
The Chennai centre opened on Friday, 12 June 2026, with a ribbon cutting and a traditional lamp lighting attended by senior company leaders, among them the chief human resources officer and the chief digital and information officer. Greif announced the opening on 29 June.
At the start, the centre supports data and AI engineering, analytics, human resources, learning and development, and total rewards. Greif said the office strengthens its ability to collaborate across regions. It has not disclosed headcount, investment or floor space. The leaders at the opening came from the group’s digital and HR functions, the two areas the centre is built to serve.
Why Chennai
Greif has not given specific reasons for choosing Chennai beyond describing it as one of India’s leading technology and business hubs. The office is separate from its Ipackchem plants in Ankleshwar and Daman, which make packaging rather than run corporate functions.
What it signals
The choice of functions says more than the location. Data engineering and analytics sit next to HR, learning and rewards, which points to a shared centre for the corporate backbone rather than a plant support office. That fits a company that has just reshaped itself, selling containerboard and changing its fiscal calendar, and now has a narrower business to run. Greif’s first step into India was a manufacturing acquisition. Chennai adds a second layer, placing enterprise work in the country alongside its factories, and gives the group room to move more global processes there if the early teams deliver.
