Backbase has added 30,000 square feet of office space at its development centre in Hyderabad’s HITEC City, the company announced on 9 October 2026. Its India team has grown from fewer than 50 engineers in 2020 to more than 600, making India its largest engineering hub outside its Amsterdam headquarters.
Backbase is an Amsterdam headquartered banking software company founded by Jouk Pleiter in 2003. More than 120 banks run on its platform across retail, small business and commercial, private banking and wealth management.
What the expansion adds
The new space will house roles in UX, full stack engineering, data engineering, SDETs, forward deployed engineering and applied AI engineering. All of it is product and platform development work, not support. Pleiter says the Hyderabad team does a growing share of the deep engineering behind AI agents that banks can run with full controls and a record of every step.
Why Hyderabad
Backbase announced the Hyderabad centre in January 2021 as its second global development centre. The company says it chose the city for its talent pool, cost efficiency, proximity to key customers and access to engineers who bring fresh thinking to complex problems.
What it signals
A twelvefold rise in five years, with new roles in applied AI, shows Backbase moving core product work to India rather than back office tasks. Telangana’s IT minister D. Sridhar Babu, who inaugurated the space, framed it as part of a wider shift of product and platform development to the state.
