Pune: thyssenkrupp Automotive Technology has opened a Global Capability Centre in Pune as part of its worldwide research and development network.
More than 120 engineers already work there on software, hardware, systems and mechanical design for customers around the world. The company plans to grow the team to more than 300 over the next few years.
The centre is at Solitaire Business Hub 2 in Baner Balewadi. Its engineers work on embedded systems, functional safety, cybersecurity and chassis technology, including new steering and chassis systems.
“Pune is much more than an additional development location for us.”
Dr. Björn Erbe, Senior Vice President R&D, chassis business, thyssenkrupp Automotive Technology
The company is also building a sales team in Pune to work with Indian carmakers, and says India is becoming more important as a source of parts. It may start making products locally if it wins the right customer contracts.

Our analysis
Some of the most important engineering thyssenkrupp does for carmakers, the software and safety systems behind steering and chassis, is now being done in Pune. The new sales team and the sourcing plans show the company also sees India as a market to sell into. Local manufacturing is the logical next step if the orders come.
