The US semiconductor equipment leader has been building in India for two decades. The new Chennai facility is where that investment becomes permanent infrastructure.

KLA Corporation opened its new R&D and Innovation Hub in Chennai on January 7, 2026. The facility spans over 300,000 square feet and accommodates up to 1,300 employees. It consolidates KLA’s AI, software development, engineering, and product support functions in India under one roof.

KLA has operated in India since 2004. The Chennai centre has evolved over those two decades from a software engineering outpost into what the company describes as an AI and engineering centre of excellence.

What the facility does

The hub supports KLA’s global semiconductor process control and inspection work — the technology that helps chipmakers detect defects and maintain precision across increasingly complex manufacturing processes. As AI workloads drive demand for more advanced chips, the pressure on process control technology intensifies. Chennai is where a significant portion of the engineering behind those solutions is built.

Dominic David, President of KLA India, said: “Over the past two decades, KLA has grown steadily in India, building a strong foundation in software engineering, AI, and innovation. The new facility enables our teams to scale with purpose, driving innovation, fostering employee wellbeing, and strengthening our global programs.”

Built for engineers

The campus is designed to LEED and WELL standards, with energy-efficient systems and spaces built around how engineers actually work — quiet zones, mid-energy zones, and high-energy collaboration areas, alongside a Zen Garden and a Makers’ Lab equipped with PCBs, circuits, and 3D printers.

Arka Ghosh, a Technology Specialist at KLA, said: “The quiet zones, mid-energy zones, and high-energy zones are thoughtfully designed. The Zen Garden and Makers’ Lab really stood out. For engineers like us, having a space to explore creativity with PCBs, circuits, and 3D printers is exciting.”

The semiconductor angle

KLA ranked fifth on Fortune’s 2026 America’s Most Innovative Companies list. Its process control equipment sits at a critical point in the semiconductor supply chain — without accurate inspection and metrology, chipmakers cannot maintain the yields that make advanced chip production economically viable.

India’s semiconductor ambitions are accelerating. The government has backed chip design and manufacturing initiatives, and global firms are responding by deepening their engineering presence here. KLA’s Chennai expansion is one of the more significant anchors in that ecosystem — a company with over 20 years of India history now making its largest single facility commitment in the country.

KLA Corporation is a US-based semiconductor process control company headquartered in Milpitas, California, listed on Nasdaq.
