The Standard, the American insurance, retirement and investment provider, opened its permanent global capability centre at Embassy Tech Village in Bengaluru in April 2026. The launch came about five months after the company started operations in India through its local entity, The Standard India. Karnataka’s minister for electronics, IT and biotechnology formally inaugurated the office.
Founded in 1906 and based in Portland, Oregon, The Standard sells group and individual disability insurance, group life, dental and vision cover, absence management and paid leave services, retirement plans and individual annuities. It is part of StanCorp Financial Group, which Japan’s Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance acquired in a deal that closed in 2016. In April 2025 The Standard bought the Employer Voluntary Benefits business of Allstate, a deal that also shaped its route into India.
What the centre will do
The Bengaluru centre focuses on AI engineering, cloud platform development, data and analytics, digital transformation and insurance operations. Over time the company plans to add software engineering, total experience work and enterprise platforms. A key aim is to bring select technology work that vendors currently deliver back into in house engineering teams. The company is also building local leadership across finance, HR, talent acquisition, IT, administration and communications. Mohua Sengupta, senior vice president and country head for India, leads the operation, working closely with Greg Chandler, executive vice president of information technology.
Why Bengaluru
Bengaluru gives The Standard the deepest pool of AI, cloud and data engineers in India, along with a large base of professionals experienced in insurance technology. Embassy Tech Village is a large office campus already home to many global companies, which makes hiring experienced managers easier. For a company shifting work from vendors to its own engineers, access to that senior talent matters.
The Standard’s India footprint
The Standard India operates as StanCorp Global Services India Pvt Ltd and began work in November 2025 with 175 employees in Bengaluru and Pune. Those staff had been with Allstate’s Indian unit and moved across following the acquisition of the voluntary benefits business. The Bengaluru centre gives that team a permanent home and a base for further hiring.
What it signals
The Standard’s path into India shows how acquisitions are creating new capability centres. An inherited team gave the company a running start, and within months it had a dedicated campus and a plan to insource technology work. Mid sized American insurers have been slower than banks to build captive centres in India, and this move suggests that gap is narrowing.
