NEC builds digital public infrastructure, telecom networks and biometric systems in India and runs a global delivery centre that develops software for NEC customers worldwide. Its India work spans smart city command centres, airport biometric boarding, transport systems and submarine cables.
Ownership and structure
NEC operates in India through NEC Corporation India Private Limited, which became wholly owned in 2013 when NEC bought HCL Technologies' 49 percent stake in their software joint venture.

NEC's India business
NEC began operating in India in the 1950s with telecom work such as microwave communication systems and switches. NEC Technologies India was renamed NEC Corporation India on September 21, 2020.
NEC Laboratories India was established in July 2018. NEC built the Chennai to Andaman and Nicobar submarine cable and has supported more than 4,000 buses on bus rapid transit projects in India.

- 2005: NEC and HCL Technologies founded the software joint venture NEC HCL System Technologies in October, with NEC holding 51 percent.
- 2013: NEC agreed in March to buy HCL's 49 percent stake and renamed the company NEC Technologies India.
- 2018: NEC Laboratories India was established in July as an incubation hub for social innovation technology.
- 2020: NEC Technologies India was renamed NEC Corporation India with effect from September 21.
