MUFG Bank serves Japanese and Indian corporates in India through the largest branch network of any Japanese bank in the country. The group has also become a major investor in Indian finance, with stakes in lenders and fintech companies.

MUFG operates in India through branches of MUFG Bank, Ltd. and wholly owned units including MUFG Global Service Private Limited. In December 2025 it agreed to take a 20 percent stake in Shriram Finance.

MUFG's India business
MUFG opened its Mumbai branch in 1953. In August 2022 it opened a GIFT City branch, its sixth in India and the first by a Japanese bank there.
MUFG Global Service Private Limited, set up in 2020 in Bengaluru and Mumbai, had about 1,700 employees in 2025. In December 2025 MUFG agreed to buy a 20 per cent stake in Shriram Finance for about USD 4.4 billion.
