Standard Chartered has refreshed its Priority Banking proposition in India, aligning the country’s operations with the group’s strategic pivot toward the wealth and affluent segment.
The bank, one of the oldest foreign lenders in India with a continuous presence of more than 165 years, announced the revamp on 13 January. It rebuilds Priority around four pillars, namely wealth expertise, international banking, sales and service expertise, and exclusive lifestyle benefits, and marks a shift from a product-led model toward deeper, multi-product relationships meant to support clients more holistically as their needs evolve.
Standard Chartered is positioning India as a key market in its push to capture wealthy clients, a segment where margins are higher and relationships stickier than in mass-market retail banking. Its pitch rests on the cross-border network that distinguishes it from domestic rivals: a presence in 54 markets, backed by digital capabilities and cross-border banking solutions, aimed at clients whose finances are increasingly international.
At the centre is the bank’s wealth business, built to help clients grow, manage and protect their wealth, delivered through Standard Chartered and its securities arm, Standard Chartered Securities India, and supported by INSEAD-trained wealth specialists and relationship managers. The bank has also been building dedicated Priority Banking Centres inside existing branches.
The refresh includes ‘Priority Exclusives’, a bundle of curated lifestyle, travel and wellness privileges headlined by the Beyond Credit Card, an invite-only metal card for Priority clients. Beyond banking, clients get access to specialist services including global education, international citizenship assistance and relocation support, delivered through a digital platform called SC Privileges.
Aditya Mandloi, Head of Wealth and Retail Banking, India and South Asia, said:
“India continues to be a strategic growth market for our Wealth and Retail Banking business. Our enhanced Priority proposition, including the launch of our Beyond Credit Card, reflects our commitment to further entrench ourselves within the wealth and affluent segment. We are committed to supporting the ambitions of the Global Indian client segment, leveraging our global expertise, intuitive digital platforms, and curated lifestyle benefits.”
He added that the bank’s “client continuum, global network and wealth expertise” position it as “a leading international wealth player,” with a strategy centred on “serving clients holistically across individual and business needs, supported by superior and consistent client experience.”
The move reflects a wider pattern among foreign banks in India: rather than compete with deep-pocketed domestic players on scale, they are targeting affluent and globally mobile clients where an international footprint is a genuine differentiator. Standard Chartered operates 98 branches across 41 cities in India, with corporate and investment banking and wealth and retail banking as its core segments.
