Walgreens Sets Up First India GCC in Chennai

Walgreens has picked Chennai for its first global capability centre in India. Its local entity, Walgreens India Private Limited, signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu government in September 2026 to set up the centre at DLF Downtown in Taramani, on the Old Mahabalipuram Road IT corridor. The unit will start with more than 250 roles in its first year and grow in phases after that.

Walgreens is one of the biggest pharmacy chains in the United States, with roughly 8,000 stores across the country and Puerto Rico and a head office in Deerfield, Illinois. The company went private in August 2025, when Sycamore Partners completed a takeover worth about $10 billion. Stefano Pessina and his family reinvested their entire holding as part of that deal, and Mike Motz took over as chief executive.

What the centre will do

The Chennai centre will build technology and business services capabilities for the wider company, and the first wave of hiring covers high value technology and operational roles. Walgreens has not disclosed how much it will invest. Umapathy Viswanathan, who leads the GCC for Walgreens, signed the agreement at the Secretariat with Deepak Jacob, managing director and chief executive of Guidance Tamil Nadu, the state’s investment promotion agency. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister attended along with the state Industries Minister, and the Chief Minister urged the company to look at creating jobs for young people in the state’s tier two and tier three cities.

Why Chennai

Tamil Nadu has notified the OMR stretch as a dedicated corridor for capability centres, one of three such corridors the state plans as it pitches Chennai as a serious alternative to Bengaluru. DLF Downtown in Taramani sits on that corridor, within reach of the city’s established IT parks and its large base of engineering graduates. Our page on GCCs in Chennai tracks the other companies building in the city.

Walgreens’ India footprint

This is the company’s first capability centre in India. Walgreens already has a registered Indian company, Walgreens India Private Limited, which is the entity behind the Chennai agreement. The company has said it will expand headcount beyond the first year, though it has not set a longer term hiring target or a timeline for reaching full scale.

What it signals

Walgreens joins a growing group of US healthcare and pharmacy companies that run their own teams in India. For a business that has just gone private and is cutting stores at home, a captive centre gives it technology and operations capacity under its direct control. For Chennai, the deal hands the new OMR corridor an early anchor tenant and offers a first test of whether the state’s corridor policy can draw capability centres that might otherwise default to Bengaluru or Hyderabad.
