Wacker Chemie has set up a global capability centre in Pune with support from HCLTech. Announced on 27 August 2026, the centre will serve as a delivery hub for the German chemical group’s engineering, IT and digital transformation programmes. Neither company has disclosed a headcount.
Wacker Chemie is a German chemicals and biotechnology group that operates through four divisions: silicones, polymers, biosolutions and polysilicon. It employs more than 16,000 people and posted sales of about €5.5 billion in fiscal 2025. Its global network includes 27 production sites, 22 technical competence centres and 47 sales offices.
What the centre will do
The Pune centre, run under the name Wacker Excellence Hub Pune, will handle engineering, technology and digital work for the group. HCLTech is helping to set up delivery structures, build teams and introduce operational frameworks, drawing on its DevSecOps and automation capabilities. The model is phased and aimed at building lasting in house capabilities rather than a standalone outsourced delivery unit. The partners also expect the centre to strengthen governance, improve operational efficiency and modernise Wacker’s digital systems. Fabian Seibold is director of the hub.
Why Pune
Pune has a long history as a base for German engineering and industrial companies, and it offers a deep bench of software, automation and plant engineering talent. That mix suits a centre that needs to understand both enterprise IT and the realities of chemical manufacturing. The city also has a mature ecosystem of technology service providers able to stand up a new captive centre quickly.
Wacker Chemie’s India footprint
Wacker has operated in India for more than two decades. Its silicones business runs through Wacker Metroark Chemicals, a joint venture with Indian partner Metroark in which Wacker holds 51 percent, with manufacturing near Kolkata since 1999. A wholly owned subsidiary, Wacker Chemie India, was incorporated in 2009 to represent the polymers business, and the group opened a technical centre in the country that year. Its corporate office is in Mumbai, with branch offices in Delhi, Chennai and Bengaluru.
What it signals
Mid sized European industrial groups have increasingly turned to Indian IT service firms to help them build captive centres, rather than outsourcing work outright or building from scratch. Wacker’s move fits that pattern and shows chemicals companies treating digital and engineering capability as something to own, with Pune as a natural home for that work.
