Vanguard to Grow Hyderabad Centre to Nearly 2,400 by 2029

Vanguard plans to expand its Hyderabad capability centre to nearly 2,400 employees by 2029, the investment manager set out in April 2026. Hiring is under way across engineering, data science, cybersecurity and product development. The plan builds on a centre that opened only in November 2025.

Vanguard is one of the world’s largest asset managers, overseeing more than $10 trillion for upwards of 50 million investors. It is based in the United States and is known for its investor owned structure and low cost index funds. Under chief executive Salim Ramji, who took over in 2024, the firm has been investing heavily in its technology and digital experience for clients.

What the centre will do

Vanguard wants its Hyderabad team to own whole technology functions over time rather than act as a support arm. The goal is to build expertise in house and depend less on outside vendors, giving the firm tighter control of its technology stack, data systems and product work. The centre’s mandate covers engineering, cloud modernisation, data and analytics, AI and machine learning, mobile engineering and cybersecurity, with labs set up to speed up work on Vanguard’s digital platforms.

Why Hyderabad

When Ramji met Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy in March 2025 to confirm the plan, he pointed to the city’s deep and diverse talent pool, its quality of life, its technology ecosystem and the state government’s supportive policies. Hyderabad has since become one of the most active cities for new capability centres in financial services, technology and life sciences. Our page on GCCs in Hyderabad tracks that growth.

Vanguard’s India footprint

Hyderabad is Vanguard’s first capability centre in India. The firm announced it in December 2024 and Telangana IT and Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu inaugurated the 165,000 sq ft Global Value Centre in November 2025. Global chief information officer Nitin Tandon described it as building on a working relationship in the region that goes back about a decade. Venkatesh Natarajan leads Vanguard India. The new 2029 target lifts the headcount goal slightly above the roughly 2,300 the company first outlined.

What it signals

Large asset managers have tended to rely on vendors for much of their technology work. Vanguard’s decision to bring engineering, data and security work in house through an Indian centre reflects a broader shift among financial firms toward owning their core technology. That the expansion came within months of opening suggests the early hiring has gone to plan.
