Mitsubishi Fuso Opens Fuso Tech Centre India in Chennai

Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus has opened Fuso Tech Centre India in Chennai, a new engineering hub that will support development of its commercial vehicles for markets around the world. The centre began operations in March 2026 and is expected to employ hundreds of engineers. It occupies about 30,600 sq ft and was fitted out in a matter of weeks.

Headquartered in Japan, Mitsubishi Fuso makes trucks and buses sold under the Fuso brand. Until recently it was part of Daimler Truck. The company is being brought together with Toyota’s Hino Motors under Archion, a new Japanese holding company formed for that purpose. The India centre is one of the first big structural moves Fuso has made as it prepares to operate outside the Daimler Truck group.

What the centre will do

The centre is meant to be a global hub for Fuso across several functions. Its work covers product engineering, IT, customer service, cost engineering and procurement. The facility includes hardware in the loop testing systems, a design studio, a diagnostic laboratory and collaborative work areas. It brings together engineering capabilities that previously sat within the wider Daimler Truck organisation and moves them into Fuso’s own structure. The company has not disclosed the investment or an exact headcount.

Why Chennai

Chennai is where Fuso already has deep manufacturing roots in India. The new centre sits close to the Oragadam plant run by Daimler India Commercial Vehicles, which has built Fuso trucks since 2013. Keeping engineers near that supply base makes it easier to work on vehicles that are produced in the region. The Chennai area is also one of India’s largest automotive clusters, with a wide pool of vehicle and software engineers.

Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus’s India footprint

Fuso’s India story has so far run through Daimler India Commercial Vehicles. The Oragadam plant near Chennai has made Fuso trucks alongside BharatBenz, Freightliner and Mercedes Benz models, and has exported Fuso medium and heavy duty trucks since 2013. Those exports helped the brand move beyond light commercial vehicles into heavier segments. The new centre gives Fuso its own engineering entity in India for the first time, separate from the Daimler Truck business in the country.

What it signals

The move shows how corporate restructuring can create new capability centres. As Fuso separates from Daimler Truck and joins Hino under Archion, it needs engineering and support functions of its own, and India is where it chose to build them. For Chennai, it strengthens the city’s standing as a base for commercial vehicle engineering, where manufacturing and development increasingly sit side by side.
