Charles Schwab opened its first technology capability centre in India on 19 August 2026, a 345,000 sq ft facility in Hyderabad. Telangana IT and Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu inaugurated the site, which the US brokerage plans to grow to about 2,000 employees by the end of 2027.
Schwab is one of the largest investment services firms in the United States, serving retail investors, independent advisers and retirement plans. At the end of July 2026 it held $13.04 trillion in total client assets and close to 40 million active brokerage accounts, with account growth running at about 6 percent a year.
What the centre will do
Operating as Schwab India, the centre will handle technology development, engineering and operations support for the company’s US business. Schwab also intends to bring some technology work now performed by contractors in India under its own roof in Hyderabad, giving it closer control over systems that sit behind client accounts and trading. Hiring will be phased, with roughly 500 people expected in the first year. Pradeep Menon leads Schwab India as managing director and country head, and Subba Perepa is managing director of the capability centre.
Why Hyderabad
Hyderabad hosts more than 475 global capability centres, and the state government says nine of the world’s ten biggest brokerage and trading firms already run operations there. Telangana is pitching the city as a hub for capital markets and wealth technology, with strengths in asset management systems, market infrastructure, AI and risk technology. Menon pointed to the city’s technology talent, infrastructure and established ecosystem for capability centres as the deciding factors.
Charles Schwab’s India footprint
The Hyderabad facility is Schwab’s first centre of its own in India. Part of its technology work in the country has so far been handled through contractors, some of which will now move in house, and the company described it as a key step in its next phase of global growth, built to support its technology needs for years to come.
What it signals
Schwab is building out in India just as some peers trim back office roles and point to AI as a reason for smaller teams. Its decision to insource contractor work and start from scratch fits a wider pattern among late moving financial firms, which now see owned centres as the better way to secure engineering talent and protect core platforms. For Hyderabad, it adds another large US capital markets name to a cluster the state is actively courting.
