Milacron has opened its first global capability centre in Coimbatore, a purpose built facility for a team of more than 60 engineers. The centre was inaugurated on 20 July 2026 and will work on engineering, product development and innovation for the plastics machinery maker’s global business.
Milacron makes injection moulding, extrusion and auxiliary equipment for plastics processors, along with parts, service and digital tools. Its customers sit in automotive, packaging, medical, construction, electronics and consumer goods. The company is based in Batavia, Ohio, and has more than 50,000 machines installed worldwide. In March 2025 Hillenbrand sold a 51 percent stake in the Milacron injection moulding and extrusion business to Bain Capital, which now has operational control, while Hillenbrand kept the remaining stake.
What the centre will do
The Coimbatore team covers engineering and product development, digital engineering for the company’s M Powered industrial internet of things platform, enterprise technology, global business services and customer support. The company has said the centre will strengthen local customer service and widen its innovation and engineering capacity. Suraj Thodimarath, managing director of Milacron India, formally opened the office.
Why Coimbatore
Coimbatore is not a new choice for Milacron. The company has worked from the city since 2014, when it set up a finance shared services operation there. That unit later grew into a broader global business services centre and then into an engineering hub, so the new facility formalises work the city was already doing. Coimbatore also has a long manufacturing and engineering base of its own, with pumps, motors, textile machinery and auto components, which gives a machinery maker a ready pool of mechanical and design talent at lower cost than the larger metros.
Milacron’s India footprint
Milacron’s main Indian asset is its manufacturing plant in Ahmedabad, which builds injection and blow moulding machines and has delivered thousands of them to Indian and overseas customers. The Coimbatore centre sits alongside that plant and serves the global business rather than only Indian customers.
What it signals
Most capability centre growth in India still lands in the big six cities. Milacron’s move is a reminder that industrial firms often prefer smaller engineering towns where they already have roots, and that a back office unit can turn into a product engineering centre over a decade.
