Generac opened its first dedicated global capability centre in India in June 2026, choosing Pune for the site. Called the Generac Business and Technology Centre, the 21,494 sq ft facility is built for more than 150 professionals and leaves room to grow. It will handle engineering, technology and business operations for the group worldwide.
Founded in 1959 and based in Waukesha, Wisconsin, Generac designs and makes power generation equipment, energy storage systems and energy management products. It sells into residential, commercial, industrial, telecom, rental and data centre markets. Net sales reached US$4.21 billion in 2025, and demand from data centre customers has become a major growth driver for its commercial and industrial business.
What the centre will do
The Pune centre is set up as a multi function hub rather than a single service unit. Its teams cover engineering, technology, digital and business functions, and the company plans to grow it into a centre of excellence for selected engineering disciplines that can serve operations around the world. Building leadership and deep technical skills locally is part of the plan.
Shyam Sunder, vice president for the global business and technology centre at Generac India, leads the operation. The office itself was designed around collaboration, with open team zones, quiet areas and flexible meeting rooms, and it uses sensor based energy management and efficient lighting to keep running costs and power use down.
Why Pune
Generac picked India after a formal review of the talent markets it needs for global growth. Pune won out because of its strong engineering base and long manufacturing history. The local skill pool lines up closely with Generac’s core work in power generation, energy management and advanced technology development.
Generac’s India footprint
The Pune facility is Generac’s first purpose built capability centre in India and its main base in the country. The company has described the launch as a long term commitment to India and has been hiring in Pune across engineering and business roles to fill the new space.
What it signals
Power equipment makers are seeing a surge in orders tied to data centres and grid resilience, and that is stretching their engineering teams. Generac’s choice of Pune, a city with deep roots in mechanical and electrical engineering, shows how industrial firms are using India to add design and technology capacity quickly. It also adds another energy technology name to Pune’s growing list of capability centres.
